Tentative Job Description for American Cultural Studies
The American Cultural Studies Program at Colorado College invites
applications for a tenure-track, Assistant Professor position in
American Cultural Studies with an affiliation or a joint appointment
with a designated department. We are searching for candidates with
teaching and research interests in the intersection of race, ethnicity,
and politics. All candidates with special interests in interdisciplinary
scholarship and with experience in ethnic studies will be considered.
The position will start in the Fall of 2008.
Such a position will include teaching three core courses in the program.
The remaining two or three courses will be negotiated with the
designated department, but these courses will be centrally related to
the intersection of race, class, and gender. In addition to teaching
responsibilities, the position involves assisting the American Cultural
Studies director with developing the program, coordinating diversity
efforts on campus, and developing new community-based learning courses,
playing on the rich diversity of our region.
Colorado College is a private, undergraduate liberal arts institution
that stresses excellence in teaching as our highest priority. On our
modular schedule we teach the equivalent of semester-long courses one at
a time for a period of three and half weeks; the standard teaching load
is six courses a year. The successful candidate will be committed to the
mission of a liberal arts college, will support and contribute to the
goal of achieving greater diversity at Colorado College, and will be
able to work effectively with the many constituencies at the college as
a contribution to a positive learning and work environment for all
members of the community. Candidates may visit the Colleges Web site at

in one of the disciplines within the social sciences, humanities or from
an interdisciplinary program such as Ethnic Studies. All requirements
for the PhD should be completed by the time of appointment. Other
preferred qualifications include: ongoing record of scholarly or
creative productivity in the broad discipline of ethnic studies,
experience in multicultural undergraduate teaching settings, student
mentorship, curricular development, background in community activism,
and/or strong interpersonal and communication skills. Applications must
include a statement outlining teaching and research interests, a vita,
graduate transcripts, evidence of teaching effectiveness, and three
current letters of recommendation. They must be submitted by December
10, 2007.

increasing the diversity of the college community. Candidates who can
contribute to that goal are particularly encouraged to apply and to
identify their strengths or experiences in this area. The Colorado
College welcomes members of all groups and reaffirms its commitment not
to discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, age,
national origin, disability or sexual orientation.
